Tip: Flooring TOP

Ironwood Designs usually recommend that the flooring you choose should be two shades darker than your paint tone. The reflection of light in the room will make it seem lighter. We often like to sink carpets in the middle of the room, with a 12” to 18” wood surround. The area of wood chosen for the room will depend on traffic flow and furniture, such as depth of an armoire.

Tip: Carpet TOP

Ironwood Designs suggests carpet that will be easily cleaned and durable for family living. Our most popular selections consist of a Berber or plush.

Tip: Kitchen and Bath TOP

The designers at Ironwood Designs like to mix different styles and varieties of countertops, cabinets, and hardware for the kitchen areas of the home. We like to use a counter for the outside of the kitchen to blend out with the flooring in the room. This will make the room look and feel larger. We also suggest using a different (fun) selection for the island.

Mix the finish of your kitchen cabinetry up to give it the look of furniture. The island should be a different finish than the surrounding cabinets, and maybe a little bit different style.

You should mix your hardware in your kitchen using knobs or handles for the doors, and stacked cuffs for drawers.

Tip: Lighting Tip TOP

Ironwood Designs suggests using recessed lighting in all four corners of the room 12”-18” apart. The designers also suggest not using ceiling fans unless they are needed for circulation. If this is the case, paint the fans out to the same color of the ceiling.

Tip: Paint TOP

90% of your home should be the same neutral color. The remaining 10% should be used for color blocking.  This would be painting out architectural elements on a wall, or creating a focal painting out the headboard wall in a bedroom or the wall the fireplace is located. Paint your ceiling the same neutral as the rest of the room. This will subtract white as a color in the room.

Tip: Fabric TOP

Printed fabric should be introduced in subtle places in the room, such as pillows or seat cushions at a fireplace or bay area. We recommend a pillow size of 18-24”.

When trying to dim light at a window, Ironwood Designs recommends doing a sheer treatment (tension rod at top and bottom of window) instead of blinds. This look not only has more staying power, but is also very easy to maintain.

Our most popular window treatment is the French pleated panels. You want to take the treatment all the way to the ceiling and out from the window to add size and drama to the existing window.
